Maracas Bay Beach

Trinidad's most famous beach — legendary bake and shark, golden sand, and one of the most scenic drives in the Caribbean

Maracas Bay is, without question, the most iconic beach in Trinidad. Nestled on the north coast, cradled between the lush green peaks of the Northern Range, this sweeping crescent of golden sand has been the go-to beach for Trinidadians and visitors alike for generations. But Maracas is more than just a beautiful beach — it is a cultural institution. The legendary bake and shark stalls, the buzzing weekend atmosphere, the dramatic scenic drive to get here, and the warm, powerful Caribbean waves all combine to create an experience that is quintessentially Trinidadian.

Every weekend, thousands of locals and visitors make the pilgrimage over the mountains from Port of Spain. They come for the sand, the sea, and of course, the food. A trip to Maracas without eating bake and shark is like visiting Paris without seeing the Eiffel Tower — technically possible, but entirely pointless.

How to Get There

The journey to Maracas Bay is an experience in itself. From Port of Spain, you'll take the North Coast Road — a winding, dramatic route that climbs through the Northern Range mountains before descending to the coast. The drive takes approximately 45 minutes from the city centre, though it can take longer on weekends when every Trinidadian with a car seems to be heading the same way.

As you climb from the Saddle Road, the views become increasingly spectacular. Thick tropical rainforest clings to steep mountainsides, lookout points offer panoramic vistas of the north coast below, and the road twists and turns through some of the most beautiful scenery on the island. Several viewing points along the way are worth a stop — the most popular being the Maracas Lookout, where you can see the entire bay spread out below you before you descend.

You can drive yourself (car hire is available from Piarco Airport), take a taxi (around TT$250-350 each way from POS), or join a group with locals heading to the beach. There is a car park at the beach, though it fills up quickly on weekends — arrive before 10am if you want a guaranteed spot.

Bake and Shark — The Legendary Richard's

The row of food stalls at Maracas Beach is arguably the most famous street food destination in the Caribbean. Dozens of vendors compete for your business, each offering their own take on the classic bake and shark — a deep-fried shark fillet served in freshly made fried "bake" bread, then customised at the condiment bar with an array of sauces and toppings.

Among them all, Richard's stands as the most legendary. For decades, this stall has been synonymous with Maracas bake and shark. The shark is perfectly seasoned and fried to a crisp golden finish, the bake is soft and fresh, and the condiment bar offers garlic sauce, tamarind sauce, coleslaw, pineapple, pepper sauce, chadon beni sauce, lettuce, and more. Building your perfect bake and shark at the condiment bar is an art form — pile it high, be generous with the sauces, and don't be shy with the pepper.

A bake and shark costs around TT$40-60 (approximately £4-6), making it one of the best food deals you'll find anywhere. Most vendors also offer bake with fish, bake with cheese, and other variations. Wash it down with a cold Carib beer or fresh coconut water.

💡 Insider Tip

While Richard's is the most famous, locals will tell you to try the other stalls too — Natalie's and Sharon's & Pheb's both have devoted followings. The competition keeps everyone at the top of their game. Go hungry and try more than one!

What to Expect at the Beach

Maracas Bay is a wide, long beach with powerful waves that are perfect for bodysurfing but can be strong for less confident swimmers. The beach is patrolled by lifeguards, and flags indicate swimming conditions. The sand is golden and the water is warm year-round (27-30°C). Facilities include changing rooms, showers, and toilets. Vendors sell everything from cold drinks to beach toys.

The vibe at Maracas is social and lively, especially on weekends and public holidays. Families set up camp with coolers and umbrellas, groups play football on the sand, music drifts from car speakers, and the bake and shark stalls do a roaring trade from morning until late afternoon. During the week, it's noticeably quieter — perfect if you prefer more space.
